AV Case Study: Change North Adelaide
Leedall hits the gym with a complete Biamp audio solution.

According to its credo, Change ‘gives a f***’ – about its people, clients, facilities, styling and, clearly, it’s audio offering. The newest outlet, at 88 O’Connell Street, North Adelaide, embodies the Change ethos. It’s classy, and it sounds good.
Downstairs is the high-octane functional training floor – turf, sleds, battle ropes, and other fitness contraptions. Upstairs is a reformer Pilates studio, an open-plan cardio and free-weights zone, a recovery lounge, and a spa, complete with ice baths, saunas and individual treatment pods. Every square metre feels premium.
Adelaide-based AV provider, Leedall, was engaged to design and install the audio solution that leans almost exclusively on Biamp systems.

GROUND FLOOR: FOREGROUND
The functional training space is demanding on the audio. Classes are loud, instructors (at times) need to be louder, and the playlist has to thump. Leedall specified Biamp Desono DP8 eight-inch pendant loudspeakers – the bigger, beefier cousins in the Desono range – hung in an evenly spaced grid. Fed from a single Biamp Voltera D1200.4M amplifier/controller, the entire floor is treated as one 100V line zone.

Biamp Desono D6 pendant loudspeakers take care of BGM in the cardio room. Desono C-C166 in-ceiling speakers in the changerooms and elsewhere.

UPSTAIRS: WELLNESS
Upstairs, the audio takes a back seat – low-profile yet all-pervasive. All the spaces (including the training room, Pilates studio, spa and changerooms) are covered by Biamp loudspeakers.
What with the exposed ceilings, pendant loudspeakers were the most appropriate option in the cardio floor, reformer Pilates studio and recovery lounge. Here the weapon of choice is the slimline Biamp Desono pendant range (mostly D6, with a handful of D8s where extra poke was needed). The complement of Biamp Desono pendants provide smooth, even background coverage. A second Voltera DM Series amp drives four independent 100V line zones.

Biamp’s Voltera DM Series pack flexible power-sharing amplification with onboard Tesira DSP.
Leedall Associate Designer, Tim Biedman, has been impressed by the Voltera DM amps: “We commissioned the entire system offline back at the office using the correct Biamp speaker profiles and presets. When we arrived on site we literally plugged it in and it worked. No on-site tuning required. The Voltera amplified controllers handle all the voicing, compression, and limiting, so there’s no risk of trainers blowing drivers however carried away they get.
“I hadn’t actually used Voltera DM before this project, but as soon as I saw it I loved the all-in-one design. No separate DSP-to-amp cabling, tidy 1RU box, Dante in, 100-Volt line out, done.”
All models in the Voltera DM range are housed in a single 1RU chassis, offering 600W total up to 4800W, with dynamic power sharing across the channels. It will drive either constant-voltage or low-impedance loads, and you can program it either in standard Tesira software or via the standalone VenueTune application.

Leedall opted for Biamp’s marine-grade CMAR6 in-ceiling speakers for the spa and private spa areas.
SPA’ING PARTNER
The spa zone is something special but the humidity is brutal, thanks to the steam rooms and saunas, so Leedall reached for Biamp’s marine-grade CMAR6 in-ceiling loudspeakers. There’s an exclusive ‘spa within a spa’ space that gets its own audio zone (along with its own ice plunge bath and infrared sauna), for a fully-personalised experience.

Biamp’s TEC-X1000 wall panel combines good looks and easy-to-use push/turn user interface.
UNDER CONTROL
Stategically placed throughout Change are Biamp TEC-X 1000 wall controllers. They employ a simple UI to ensure anyone can rock up and get connected. When a trainer walks in, it’s easy to pair a phone, put on a headset, set the mic and music levels, and off they go. Music ducks automatically when they speak, or the instructor can mute the mic from either the beltpack or the wall panel. In the reformer studio Biamp Parlé TCM-XEX beam-tracking mic arrays provide hands-free coverage across the space. All up, zero training is required – gym staff were apparently using the system confidently before the Leedall team had even run the official five-minute handover.
BIAMP BUY-IN
Leedall is justifiably proud of this project. It’s a high-end wellness space that sounds as good as it looks. Project Manager, Nico van Wieringen, reckons that for a job like this, committing to a Biamp one-stop solution makes sense: “One ecosystem where every component is designed to work together was been the right approach here. Biamp speakers have factory-tuned profiles that load straight into the DSP, the Voltera amplified controllers have the DSP built in, and the wall controllers are native Biamp. The result is that you literally cannot overdrive the speakers unless you try very hard – all the limiting, voicing, and protection is pre-configured and locked in. That translates directly into reliability, which for a small business means no expensive call-outs. We’ve used almost this exact combination elsewhere and it just sits there and works, year after year – so we’re confident Change will get many years of hassle-free use out of this Biamp system.”
In a venue where the lighting, the scent and the towel fluffiness are all obsessively curated, the Biamp ecosystem has quietly disappeared into the architecture and just gets on with the job… without breaking a sweat.
