AV Case Study: Brisbane Airport

Brisbane Airport is in the middle of an epic A$5b upgrade in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics. A big-time upgrade to 950 LG commercial displays (backed by LG’s SuperSign CMS) is a huge digital transformation.

An impending date with Olympic destiny is always great for a city’s public infrastructure, and we’re talking about more than upgrades to the sporting venues. An airport is the ‘welcome mat’ for many thousands of athletes, spectators and officials. It’s got to look sharp and have the efficiency of a Swiss watch.

Brisbane will play host to the 2032 Games and is in the middle of a city wide schuzz up. The privately-owned Brisbane Airport is at the pointy end, with more than $5b being invested into additions and upgrades designed to meet the demands of a growing city and population as they head into the Olympics and beyond.

Recently, it has completed one of its most significant digital transformations in years, upgrading approximately 950 displays and migrating to LG’s SuperSign CMS. The project modernises passenger wayfinding, flight information and operational communications while delivering improved reliability, sustainability and centralised control.

SCREENS OF THE FUTURE

The upgrade spans a wide range of LG display technologies tailored to different airport environments. From standard 43- and 49-inch panels to Ultra Stretch displays in totems, high-brightness outdoor units (49XE series), 110-inch UM5K indoor screens, and a striking 136-inch All-in-One LED (LAPA series) in international arrivals, the ecosystem supports everything from gate information and FIDS to dynamic passenger messaging.

Anthony Tully-Smith, ICT Applications Manager at Brisbane Airport, highlights how the variety makes a difference: “The products we chose from LG really provide us a great viewing experience for our stakeholders, but it’s the variety of products that makes the difference.”

Some 950 LG commercial displays have been installed, including this FIDS video wall.

SUPER SIGN OF THE TIMES

At the heart of the new infrastructure is LG SuperSign CMS, deployed on-premise for security and control reasons. For a relatively small ICT team managing a vast, multi-terminal campus (domestic, international, baggage handling, car parks and more), remote monitoring and proactive management were non-negotiable.

“LG SuperSign has been a game changer for my team,” says Tully-Smith. “We just don’t have the arms and legs to go around and check those 950 screens on a daily basis. The monitoring capabilities really give us that eyes-on view of what’s across our infrastructure. It allows us to triage and fix faults as they come up, and gives us that executive view of how our fleet is performing at any given time.”

The move also simplified a previously fragmented architecture. Jacob Marino, Sales Engineer at LG Electronics, notes that external media players were a major pain point. “We leveraged LG’s System-on-Chip platform and our internal web page player. Now the screens and the real-time flight information tracking play back directly on the displays rather than via an external media player.”

SECURITY & SUSTAINABILITY LOCKED IN

Airports operate under strict critical infrastructure requirements, so security was paramount. Tully-Smith explains: “Our security was largely driven by the on-premise instance of LG SuperSign, which gives us complete control. What attracted us to LG displays was the device hardening. Being able to ensure that people weren’t able to sideload a USB drive and put up a nefarious image was really important for us.”

Sustainability was another key driver. Justin Park, Transportation Business Development Manager at LG Electronics, says ESG credentials were central to the selection: “One of the key reasons for the airport trusting us with this upgrade was the strength of LG’s ESG and sustainability measures. The Carbon Trust footprint reduction certification on our UH screens was integral as well as offering a free e-waste program.”

Tully-Smith adds that power consumption monitoring and optimisation were important factors in meeting Brisbane Airport’s net-zero ambitions.

RELIABILITY MATTERS ON THE GROUND

For the operations team, display uptime directly affects passenger flow and staff workload. Michael Kerr, Integrated Operations Centre Manager, is blunt: “The reliability of the displays is essential. Without them working, people are lost – quite literally. They don’t know how to get around the airport effectively. Prior to the upgrade, our phone would ring hot when equipment failed.”

Graham Wands, Business Development Manager at Programmed (the integration partner), emphasises the shift from fragmented legacy systems: “We’ve taken what was a fragmented digital signage system, not very visible to management, now to an integrated modern solution with centralised management and health visibility. LG SuperSign enables us to take a proactive stance and make sure that the FIDS and other signage is highly available and always visible to passengers.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2032

This upgrade is just the beginning as it rolls out the pre-Olympics multi-billion-dollar upgrades. Tully-Smith sees LG as a long-term partner: “Brisbane Airport is right in the middle of a $5 billion upgrade. We’re always looking at how we modernise and keep ourselves looking fresh for the future. We’re very excited to work with LG on some of those innovative concepts that really bring in our future-forward passenger-facing experience.”

Future plans include Terminal 3 expansion, additional LED installations for control rooms, and enhanced emergency/weather messaging capabilities.

STRONG PARTNERSHIP

The project reflects close collaboration between Brisbane Airport, LG Electronics and Programmed. Wands notes: “Working with LG and Brisbane Airport is a great partnership. We enjoy the vision that Brisbane Airport has around its display technologies, but also with LG being such an engaged partner with such a great catalogue.”

Tully-Smith agrees: “It’s important for us to have a partner like LG. The innovation and the fresh thought that that team brings to us here at Brisbane Airport has really helped me accelerate the digital experience for us across all of our terminals.”
