K-Array brands itself as a manufacturer of ‘unique’ audio solutions. If you want a loudspeaker that wraps around corners or with integral LEDs or disguised as an architectural lighting rail then K-Array is your only option. K-Array is from Florence and is stylish. It sells a premium product manufactured in Italy (although it has recently released a more work-a-day range manufactured in the Far East).

K1 is a nifty little 2.1 system designed for retail, hospitality, displays or anywhere you need an incognito audio solution for smaller spaces.

Sub+satellite systems are nothing new but where K-Array delivers on its ‘unique’ promise is in the use of its Lyzard speakers. Lyzard is crazy-small. Each weighs a negligible 20 grams and they’re smaller than a match box. Under Lyzard’s skin is a tiny half-inch driver that operates upwards from around 500Hz. It has a wide 140° x 140° dispersion and is easily concealed or designed into the decor. When you can’t see Lyzard, it’s very disarming. You have no idea where the audio is coming from. When the source is pointed out, it’s only slightly easier to accept that the room-filling sound is emanating from such a tiny loudspeaker.

Of course, the truth is, it’s not entirely responsible. The sub is doing half the work. Powered by a 40W Class-D amp, the sub is measured 6dB-down at 54Hz. Its performance isn’t trouser flapping but the high excursion four-inch driver provides a balanced, full sound in smaller spaces.

Overall, K1 can be driven reasonably hard. K-Array quotes 98dB@1m peak for the sub. Thankfully the system maxes out in a very genteel way. You won’t hear the sub farting or the Lyzards crackling, K1 will simply say ‘no more’ when it’s got nothing left to give.
