Samsung Unveils the First Onyx Cinema LED Screen in Australia
We love our projectors out here in the Australian cinema scene. And good ones too. With Onyx, Samsung may well be putting an LED-shaped spanner in the works....
Samsung Electronics Australia has announced its first Onyx Cinema LED screen in Australia, unveiling a 14-metre screen at HOYTS Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park, Sydney. Another 10-metre screen will be installed in March 2020 at HOYTS Highpoint in Melbourne.
Onyx Cinema LED technology transcends the visual experience and performance reliability of the traditional projector-based solutions, which have been the industry standard for more than 120 years. Samsung’s Onyx brings the visual power of LED technology to the ‘big screen’, offering an unbelievable, immersive cinema experience.
“Through Samsung Onyx and our partnership with HOYTS, we are bringing the cinema of the future to Australia,” said Phil Gaut, Director Consumer Electronics Display Division, Samsung Electronics Australia.
“As the film industry continues to evolve, we have developed new cinema LED technology that gives our entertainment partners an edge to enhance the movie-going experience for their customers. Onyx brings Samsung’s heritage in screen innovation to the cinema and delivers detail-rich picture quality and colour spectrums that maintain colour accuracy for a range of hues and brightness levels.
“We’re proud to partner with HOYTS to launch the next generation of cinema in Australia.”
The Samsung Onyx LED screen showcases cinematic content with deep blacks, brilliant LED picture quality and an impressive contrast ratio. By bringing the visual power of LED picture quality, Samsung Onyx offers powerful, compelling and memorable content. The displays installed at HOYTS combine 4K resolution, HDR picture quality and peak brightness level of 146fL — nearly 10 times greater than what is possible with standard projector technologies.
HOYTS is a big player in the entertainment industry with more than 50 locations across Australia and New Zealand. The HOYTS Entertainment Quarter situated in Moore Park will act as HOYTS’ flagship cinema location, hosting major Australian blockbuster premieres and red-carpet events.
“We’re always looking for new ways to stay ahead of the game and provide our guests with something unexpected,” said Damian Keogh, CEO and President of HOYTS Group. “That’s why we’re leading the way by incorporating Australia’s first Onyx Cinema LED screens into our cinemas. These screens are a total game-changer, providing a movie and entertainment experience unlike anything our guests have seen before.”
Samsung’s Onyx LED screens are installed in several major cities across the world, through partnerships with Pacific Theaters in Los Angeles, USA, Capital Cinema in Beijing, China, and Arena Cinemas’ Sihlcity Theatre in Zurich, Switzerland.
