SmallHD has announced the first of a new series of 5-inch Full HD on-camera monitors, the 502, will debut at the NAB Show in Las Vegas next month. Based on a new platform, the compact device delivers 1920×1080 resolution images and supports two digital inputs.

“The image on the 502 is simply stunning,” says SmallHD co-founder Wes Phillips. “With a display that is sharper than the newest iPhone, shooters will be able to truly experience the full detail their cameras are capturing without breaking the bank.”

With a densely packed 441 pixel-per-inch screen, the monitor also features a 179° field of view for group viewing, and a wide colour gamut the company says rivals OLED display technology. It supports 3G-SDI and HDMI input, output, and cross conversion, and the device is format and frame rate agnostic, automatically adapting to a wide range of video signals.

Toolsets provided include the display of industry-standard and custom framing guides, focus assist, false colour and zebra exposure indicators, and 3D LUT (lookup table) import. The full-size SD card slot facilitates 3D LUT import and allows export of screen captures for continuity and other purposes.

The new SmallHD operating system developed for the 500 series range simplifies menu navigation – with a flick of the thumb the monitor will instantly zoom in or out of the source image, switch between tool presets, and zoom out to view three presets at once. The menus are designed to be customised to allow instant switching between frequently used features.

The 502 is small enough to carry in a pocket, even with a pair of rechargeable LP-E6 batteries installed. Measuring 75 x 146.8 x 20mm, it weighs 250g and is housed in a rugged aluminium frame with a rubberised chassis. It can also be powered by an AC/DC adapter, and from the D-tap on a camcorder or camera battery pack using the LP-E6 battery interface. Power draw is “paltry” the company says, and allows all-day operation from two LP-E6 batteries under normal use.
